ENTEBBE-President Yoweri Museveni has formally presented Ambassador Dr. Olara Otunnu as Uganda’s candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The presentation took place on August 3 at State House, Entebbe, during a meeting with ambassadors representing member states of the United Nations Security Council.
In a post on X, President Museveni said:
“Today, August 3, I met ambassadors representing members of the United Nations Security Council and formally presented Ambassador Olara Otunnu as Uganda’s candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.”
The President urged the ambassadors to convey Uganda’s endorsement to their respective governments.
He described Ambassador Otunnu as a leader with the experience, integrity, and diplomatic credentials required to lead the United Nations.
According to the announcement, seven candidates are contesting for the position of United Nations Secretary-General to succeed António Guterres. They include:
Rafael Grossi – Nominated by Argentina
Rebeca Grynspan – Nominated by Costa Rica
Olara Otunnu – Nominated by Uganda
Macky Sall – Nominated by Burundi (with regional backing)
María Fernanda Espinosa – Nominated by Antigua and Barbuda
Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett – Nominated by Guyana
Michelle Bachelet – Nominated by Chile, Brazil, and Mexico (with a note that Chile withdrew its nomination in March 2026)
President Museveni also said Uganda’s record in promoting regional peace and security, as well as its longstanding commitment to hosting refugees, reflects the values underpinning the country’s support for Ambassador Otunnu’s candidature.
