Lira University Students Commended for Innovation

Lira City Mayor, Sam Atul, has commended students of Lira University for their remarkable innovations. He emphasized that the university’s research efforts should contribute to solving real-world issues and transforming society.

Atul made the remarks during the University’s 1st Annual Internal Innovation Exhibition, held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Faculty of Education Square. This event marked a significant milestone in the University’s ongoing journey to strengthen research, innovation, and community impact.

The exhibition, themed “Harnessing Innovation in Higher Education for Accelerated Economic Transformation,” brought together faculty, researchers, students, innovators, and partners to showcase cutting-edge projects aligned with both national development goals and global transformation trends. More than 300 students from neighboring secondary schools attended the event.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Jasper Watson Ogwal-Okeng, stressed the critical role universities play as engines of innovation and catalysts for socio-economic change. He applauded exhibitors for translating research into practical solutions and called for more interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance the impact of innovations.

“Innovation must move beyond theory and become a tangible driver of economic growth, improved service delivery, and community empowerment,” he noted.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, praised the organizing team, highlighting that the exhibition featured dynamic and interdisciplinary projects reflecting the University’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges. He emphasized that Lira University is a 21st-century institution focused on cutting-edge research aimed at solving community issues.

The showcased innovations were organized under the following sub-themes:

  • Health Systems & Workforce Development
  • Data Science & Digital Transformation
  • Community Health & Social Innovation
  • Digital Health & Artificial Intelligence
  • Innovative Teaching & Learning Technologies
  • Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship

Exhibitors presented a wide range of innovations, including digital health applications, AI-powered solutions, community-focused public health interventions, and tech-enabled teaching tools. These demonstrated how research can be transformed into scalable, sustainable solutions.

Bridging Academia and Industry

The exhibition also served as a platform to strengthen links between academia, industry, policymakers, and the broader community. Participants engaged in interactive sessions and knowledge exchange, fostering partnerships and commercialization opportunities.

University leadership stressed the importance of aligning research outputs with Uganda’s national development agenda, especially in areas prioritized by the National Planning Authority. The event further underscored the institution’s commitment to nurturing innovation ecosystems within higher education.

Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators

A key highlight was the active participation of students, who presented prototypes, digital platforms, and socially responsive initiatives. This event offered an experiential learning opportunity, reinforcing practical problem-solving skills, entrepreneurship, and a collaborative research culture among students.

The Directorate of Graduate Training and Research (DGTR) commended all faculties and departments for their dedication and called for sustained institutional support to scale promising innovations beyond the exhibition.

A Foundation for an Annual Tradition

As the inaugural event, the exhibition sets the foundation for an annual tradition aimed at fostering creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and solution-driven research. Future editions will expand to include external stakeholders, industry partners, development agencies, and community innovators.

The 1st Annual Innovation Exhibition reaffirmed Lira University’s position as a beacon of knowledge, research excellence, and transformative impact in Northern Uganda and beyond.
