“We have presented our request to the ministry to raise the grant from UGX 500 million to UGX 1.5 billion, and we hope it will be considered in the upcoming budget,” he added.

He also expressed excitement about the conference, noting that it continues to attract young researchers and is expected to promote the development of entrepreneurship projects.

Dr Ojulong thanked President Yoweri Museveni for his leadership, particularly for introducing research and innovation grants for public universities. He added that over the past three years, the university has received funding totaling UGX 1.5 billion, which has produced significant outcomes.

Commissioner for University Education and Training, Ssejjoba Timothy, highlighted the complex challenges facing society, including unemployment, climate change, public health concerns, food insecurity, and inequality.

“These challenges are not abstract. They are real and demand practical, inclusive, and sustainable solutions driven by evidence, creativity, and collaboration,” he said.

He noted that the university occupies a unique and powerful position as center of knowledge creation and as catalyst for social progress, transformation, career development, and cultural advancement. He urged Lira University to align its curriculum with competency-based training and produce research that responds directly to societal needs.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Opio Okaka Dokotum, said the conference provides an opportunity for the university to account to the public for its work in teaching, research, and community engagement.

He added that the institution is aligned with the Government of Uganda’s vision of transforming higher education to focus not only on teaching but also on research that drives national development.

Lira City Mayor Sam Atul emphasized the importance of the university’s role in shaping societal transformation.

“The faster the university contributes to the growth and transformation of society, the better for everyone. Otherwise, decisions may be made that people later regret,” he said.

He assured the university of the city’s continued support and willingness to collaborate for the benefit of the community.
