Five leading secondary schools have emerged as the outstanding academic giants in the Lango sub-region following the release of the 2025 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results.
The 2025 results were officially released on February 13, 2026, by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, at State House Nakasero.
According to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), a total of 432,163 candidates from 3,975 examination centres registered for the examination, compared to 359,417 in 2024 — an increase of 72,746 candidates. Of those who sat, 428,628 candidates (99.6 percent) qualified for the UCE certificate.
UNEB explained that candidates’ performance is categorized as follows, Result 1 – Candidate qualifies for the UCE certificate, Result 2 – Candidate does not meet conditions for award (such as missing project scores, fewer subjects sat, or missing Continuous Assessment scores) and Result 3 – Candidate scored below the basic level (E) in all subjects.
Under the lower secondary curriculum grading guide, Grade A represents D1 and D2 (80–100 percent), Grade B represents C3 and C4 (70–79 percent), Grade C represents C5 and C6 (60–69 percent), Grade D represents P7 and P8 (40–59 percent), while Grade E represents F9 (0–39 percent).
In the Lango sub-region, five schools (three private and two government aided) stood out for registering high numbers of candidates in Grades A and B.
Leading the pack is Mentor Secondary School, which recorded 150 students in Grade A and 833 in Grade B.
It was closely followed by Dara Christian High School, which posted 116 Grade As and 771 Grade Bs.
St Katherine Secondary School registered 61 Grade As and an impressive 1,165 Grade Bs.
At Mentor Secondary School Gwengabara, 69 candidates attained Grade A, while 857 scored Grade B.
Meanwhile, Dr Obote College recorded 43 Grade As and 805 Grade Bs.
School heads and proprietors praised the performance, noting that all their learners passed with Result 1, although they acknowledged the need to further improve the quality of grades.
Levi Abongo, headteacher of Lira Town College, said the school is now shifting focus toward improving the proportion of top grades.
“While a 100 percent pass rate is a major achievement, we now need to concentrate on increasing the number of Grade A and B scores because Senior Five admissions largely consider these grades,” Abongo said.
He added that the school administration is ushering in a new era focused strictly on academic discipline, with plans to gradually minimize Grades C and D and increase the number of Grade A performers.
Several other schools from the Lango sub-region were ranked among the top 1,000 nationally, including St Mary’s College Aboke, Wisdom High School, Leo Atubo College, Adwari Secondary School, King James Comprehensive School, Angelika Secondary School, Comboni College Lira, Faith Secondary School, Acaba Secondary School, Otino Waa Comprehensive School, Lango College, and Muntu Secondary School.
The strong performance of these schools continues to cement Lango’s growing reputation as a centre of academic excellence in Uganda.
