Fountainhead Institute of Management and Technology (FIMAT), a private tertiary institution, has launched a scholarship and bursary programme targeting 300 students from the Lango, Acholi, and West Nile sub-regions.
The initiative was unveiled on June 8 at the institute’s campus in Awita Cell, Amuca Ward, Lira City West Division. During the launch, institute officials urged prospective applicants to take advantage of the educational opportunities now available closer to their communities.
Under the programme, each district in the three sub-regions has been allocated 20 slots for students to pursue diploma and national certificate courses, particularly in science-related fields.
According to Judith Abonyo, Head of the Solar Training Department, the courses available under the scholarship programme include National Diplomas in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Fashion Design, Animal Production, and Crop Production.
Other programmes offered include Diplomas in Accounting and Finance, Information and Communication Technology, Business Administration, and Social Work and Social Administration, among others.
“This is an opportunity for our children who are facing challenges in paying school fees. We are inviting them not to miss this opportunity that has been brought closer to their doorsteps,” Abonyo said.
She added that, besides scholarships and bursaries, the institute will provide financial support to help beneficiaries meet some of their basic expenses while studying.
The scholarship programme comes shortly after the German government, through its partner GIZ also supported solar energy training at the institute.
According to Principal Tom Okao, the first cohort undertaking the training on productive use of solar is expected to graduate soon, while a second cohort will begin their training later.
Okao encouraged young people to embrace hands-on skills training, noting that practical skills are critical for both employment and wealth creation.
“Skills training remains a cornerstone of job creation and economic empowerment. We encourage young people to take advantage of these opportunities,” he said.
