The Bishop Emeritus of West Lango Diocese, Alfred Acur Okodi, has called upon health workers at Lira Regional Referral Hospital to strive for excellence in service delivery and strengthen teamwork in order to improve patient care.

Speaking as the chief celebrant during a Prayer Breakfast held at the hospital on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Bishop Okodi commended the staff for their dedication and commitment to serving patients. However, he challenged them to work more closely together in addressing inefficiencies and enhancing healthcare services.

Bishop Okodi emphasized that medical professionals are called by God to lead the restoration of health and should use their God-given abilities to positively influence patient outcomes.

“No single individual can transform the hospital alone. Success depends on the collective efforts of doctors, nurses, administrators, and religious leaders working together in unity,” he said.

The prayer breakfast, held under the theme Delivering Quality Healthcare through Hard Work and Compassion,” brought together religious leaders from across the Lango sub-region.

Bishop Okodi noted that medical professionals have a divine responsibility to restore health and should utilize their skills and knowledge to achieve excellence in healthcare delivery.

The Secretary of the Lango Religious Leaders Forum, Rev. Thomas Obong, echoed that success is achieved through teamwork rather than individual effort.

“No one is a hero alone. We must work together, celebrate each other’s contributions, and accomplish the tasks before us as a team,” Rev. Obong said.

The Acting Director of the Hospital, Dr. Andrew Odur, said the prayer breakfast was initiated by the hospital’s top management to thank God for the institution’s achievements and dedicate staff to God as they prepare to serve the public in the 2026/27 financial year.

“A hospital that has existed for more than 100 years has experienced tremendous growth, including an increase in staff numbers, improved infrastructure, and a strengthened health system,” Dr. Odur said.

He added that the hospital is on a path toward becoming one of the best healthcare facilities in the country and urged staff to work diligently to achieve that vision in line with the policies of the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Odur highlighted the hospital’s growing annual output, including more than 300,000 laboratory tests conducted, over 10,000 surgical operations performed, and more than 200 dialysis sessions provided every month. Despite these achievements, he stressed the need for a more organized and efficient health workforce.

“I was particularly pleased to learn that three out of five critically ill patients who would otherwise have been declared dead were successfully treated and discharged from our newly operational Intensive Care Unit,” he said.

He called upon religious leaders, community leaders, and the public to support the hospital’s efforts.

“The message we want the public to hear is that this hospital is on a trajectory to become the best in the country. We ask you to join hands with us spiritually and as community leaders so that we can position the hospital ahead of others in Uganda,” Dr. Odur said.
