The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has spoken out following the defection of its Chief Whip and Central Region Chairperson, Yusuf Nsibambi, to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), stating that the move does not weaken the party.

FDC Party President Patrick Amuriat Oboi said that while Nsibambi’s decision is disappointing, it is neither surprising nor damaging to the party’s resolve in the struggle for democratic change in Uganda.

“For some time, the party had observed concerning tendencies, including his engagement at State House without the knowledge or clearance of the party leadership, a matter that was under consideration in line with Article 12 of the FDC constitution,” Oboi said.

He noted that with Nsibambi’s departure, the internal disciplinary process that had been underway is now overtaken by events, and he falls under the jurisdiction of his new political home.

Oboi strongly rejected what he described as misleading claims made against the FDC as Nsibambi exited the party.

“Our party has faced and overcome similar departures before and each time we have emerged stronger, more focused and more determined,” he added.

Nsibambi officially crossed to the NRM on February 18, citing what he described as a lack of clear direction and coordination within the opposition.

He was received by the NRM National Vice Chairperson (Female), who is also the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, and the party Secretary General, Richard Todwong.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Among welcomed him into the party:

“We hereby extend an official welcome to the Honourable Yusuf Nsibambi into the NRM family. We appreciate your recognition of the importance of our cause and your decision to join the movement dedicated to safeguarding and strengthening our nation’s achievements.”

Nsibambi, who lost the Mawokota South County parliamentary seat to Suzan Nakawuki of the NRM in the recent general elections, said he was not forced to join the ruling party.

“I am joining willingly, and I am ready to be given any task by the NRM party. I accept the results from the general elections. I have joined the struggle for peace,” he said at the NRM offices in Kampala on February 18.

He was accompanied by Gyaviira Ssemwanga, MP for Buyamba County in Rakai District, and said he has the zeal and strength to work for the party.

Oboi emphasized that the FDC is built on ideology, structures, and the commitment of members across the country—not on individuals.

“Consultations are already underway to fill the position of Chief Whip, and the party will exercise its right to appoint a replacement without delay,” he said.

He added that the party remains committed to strengthening internal discipline, improving vetting processes for leadership positions, and recruiting ideologically grounded members who will stand firm in advancing the cause of freedom, justice, and democracy.
