Uganda’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Rebecca Amuge Otengo, has urged the people of Lango to support President Yoweri Museveni and NRM parliamentary candidates ahead of the January 15 general elections.

Speaking at Lira Pentecostal Church on Sunday, Otengo praised the Museveni administration for maintaining freedom of worship, association, and national security, highlighting Uganda’s peace compared to violence in neighboring countries.

She recalled that during and after former President Idi Amin’s regime, worship outside the three officially recognized religious groups—Catholic, Anglican, and Muslim—was risky, and Pentecostal believers often had to use alternative routes to access churches.

“The peace we enjoy today did not come by mistake but through total sacrifice and commitment,” Otengo said.

She called on voters to appreciate President Museveni’s achievements, noting that among the eight presidential candidates, he remains the best choice to lead the country for the next five years.

In a show of support for the church, she pledged sh1.5 million toward its rehabilitation, urging citizens to vote for leaders with Uganda at heart: “By the grace of God, let us give Museveni the opportunity to lead until we get the right person to replace him in the near future.”

Meanwhile, Denis Alyela Omodi, the NRM parliamentary candidate for Lira City East, has asked voters to give him their mandate, asserting he is the right person to succeed the incumbent MP, Jimmy Akena, who is not contesting after serving the area for 20 years.

Alyela faces competition from James Ocen (Agipi) of the Uganda People’s Congress and independent candidate Isaac Apenyo.

“I am here to seek your support and votes in the coming election,” Alyela said, appealing to constituents to entrust him with their representation.

With political campaigns intensifying across Lira, both national and local leaders are emphasizing stability, peace, and committed leadership as key messages ahead of the polls.
