President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the release of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, ending nearly three months of restrictions on her movement.
The Special Forces Command (SFC) officers deployed at Among’s residence in Kigo, Kampala, were reportedly also withdrawn on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced the development in posts on his X account, saying Among had been forgiven.
“No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” Muhoozi said.
“Mzee (President Museveni) has instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” he added in another post.
Among welcomed the development in a post on X, thanking Muhoozi for granting her freedom.
“Thank you supreme leader for granting your sister Anitah Among freedom,” she said.
Caleb Alaka, who was part of Among’s legal team, also confirmed the development, according to media reports.
Among’s troubles began with intense public scrutiny over her lifestyle and wealth, followed by a formal petition calling for investigations into her assets and conduct under the Leadership Code Act.
Public criticism intensified in May 2026 following reports that she had airlifted a luxury 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, reportedly valued at more than Sh3 billion, into Uganda.
On May 1, 2026, the Inspectorate of Government reportedly received a petition from lawyers and activists calling for an investigation into Among’s conduct and accumulation of assets.
On May 16, joint security forces, including police and the military, reportedly launched “Operation Maliza Ufisadi,” conducting searches at her residences in Nakasero and other properties.
Among, who had been regarded as one of the powerful figures in the ruling National Resistance Movement, was subsequently placed under house arrest and remained under restrictions for nearly three months.
Her release follows the decision by President Museveni, as communicated by Gen Muhoozi, to forgive her and halt any prosecution.
