The Uganda Editors’ Guild (UEG) will convene its 2026 Annual Editors’ Convention in Jinja from July 30 to August 2, bringing together editors, media owners, policymakers, regulators and development partners to discuss the future of journalism amid growing digital disruption.
Held under the theme “Reimagining Media Viability in the Digital Age,” the convention will focus on strategies to strengthen the sustainability, independence and credibility of Uganda’s media industry as newsrooms grapple with technological change and shifting business models.
According to the organisers, participants will deliberate on key issues including the impact of Artificial Intelligence on journalism, new revenue models for media organisations, public trust, the regulatory environment and fair compensation for media houses. The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony.
Alex B. Atuhaire, Treasurer of the Uganda Editors’ Guild, said the challenges confronting journalism require collaboration beyond the media industry.
“The challenges facing journalism today cannot be solved by the media alone. Building viable, independent, and sustainable media platforms, requires collaboration, innovation, and bold conversations about the future of our profession. This Convention provides a platform for editors and partners to speak and reflect on the issues that challenge the future of good journalism,”Atuhaire said.
UEG Secretary General Sylvia Nankya said the annual convention provides an opportunity for editors to assess the state of the profession and discuss emerging challenges affecting the media landscape.
She said previous conventions had examined issues such as press freedom, misinformation, journalists’ welfare and ethical journalism, adding that this year’s meeting would continue to explore practical solutions through the exchange of experiences and best practices.
“The convention is the one time when editors come together to reflect on the state of the profession. It is a platform for honest self-assessment as well as open and candid discussions on the challenges and emerging trends affecting the media industry. In the past we have examined issues such as press freedom, tackling misinformation, the welfare of our journalists, ethical journalism, among others. By sharing experiences and best practices, participants collectively explore practical solutions to the hurdles facing the profession.”
The convention has attracted support from several public and private sector partners, including MTN Uganda and the Uganda Tourism Board.
MTN Uganda Senior Manager for Corporate Communications and Public Relations Rhona Arinaitwe said the telecommunications company was committed to supporting journalists to adapt to digital transformation.
“Technology has transformed many industries, and journalism is no exception. As the media industry evolves, journalists must be equipped to thrive in a digital world. At MTN Uganda, we recognise the vital role the Fourth Estate plays in informing the public and shaping national development. As a long- standing partner of the media and a leader in digital transformation, we believe we have a responsibility to support journalists on this journey and ensure no one is left behind. Our partnership with the Uganda Editors’ Guild reflects that commitment and the strong relationship we have built with the media over the years.” Rhona Arinaitwe, the MTN Uganda Senior Manager Corporate Communications and PR said.
Uganda Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Juliana Kagwa said responsible journalism plays a critical role in promoting Uganda as a tourism and investment destination.
She said accurate and balanced reporting helps build confidence in the country and contributes to national development.
“At the Uganda Tourism Board, we recognize that the media is one of our most valuable partners in marketing Destination Uganda. Every accurate, balanced, and responsible story contributes to building confidence in our destination and strengthens Uganda’s reputation as a welcoming, diverse, and authentic place to visit, invest, and explore. Our partnership with the Uganda Editors’ Guild for the 4th Annual Editors’ Convention reflects our shared belief that responsible journalism is essential to national development.” Juliana Kagwa, Chief Executive Officer, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB).
