Govt Launches Mandatory Monthly National Cleaning Day

The Government of Uganda has launched a mandatory National Cleaning Day, to be observed on the last Saturday of every month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., as part of efforts to promote public health, environmental cleanliness, and proper waste management.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja unveiled the initiative, which officially begins on Saturday, July 25, 2026. The exercise will be coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Movement and Business Restrictions

During the three-hour exercise, non-essential pedestrian and vehicle movement will not be allowed. Only emergency, security, and authorized medical vehicles will be permitted on the roads.

The government has also directed that all shops and commercial businesses remain closed between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to allow full public participation.

Northern Uganda Urged to Participate

The State Minister for Northern Uganda, Akello Beatrice Akori, has rallied residents across the region to take part in the inaugural National Cleaning Day.

She called on people in cities, towns, sub-counties, villages, and households to come together in cleaning their surroundings.

“Cleanliness is not just about beauty; it is about health, dignity, and the future of our children. Let us clear our compounds, markets, streets, drainage channels, and public places, pick up garbage, and ensure proper waste disposal in our communities,” Akori said.

She noted that clean environments help reduce the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and malaria, while making communities safer, healthier, and more attractive for residents and businesses.

Akori also appealed to local leaders, religious leaders, youth, women, schools, and the business community to lead mobilization efforts and encourage widespread participation.

“Together, let us make Northern Uganda the cleanest region,” she said.
