As we mark International Women’s Day 2026, with the national celebration taking place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, I take a moment to honor a remarkable woman, mother, and politician—Mama Rebecca Amuge Otengo.
Mama Rebecca Otengo, the former Woman Member of Parliament for Alebtong District and Uganda’s current Ambassador to Ethiopia, stands as one of the most distinguished leaders from the Lango region. Her unwavering dedication to peace, development, and community service continues to inspire many.
From 2005 to 2008, Rebecca Otengo, alongside the late DJ Kakaba (RIP), who working with Radio Waa in the program, Adwong Pacu (Come back home) made a selfless commitment to persuade the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels to lay down their arms and embrace peaceful coexistence. Their tireless efforts played a pivotal role in the peace process in Northern Uganda. Many former rebels, responding to their call, abandoned the path of violence. Testimonies from those they helped reintegrate attest to her profound role in fostering reconciliation and healing.
Beyond her peace-building efforts, Otengo has been a mentor and staunch advocate for women’s empowerment. Together with the late Cecilia Ogwal and other pioneering women, she inspired many to pursue politics and recognize education as a transformative tool for societal change. Her mentorship has paved the way for countless women who have taken on leadership roles in Uganda’s political sphere today.
As a dedicated leader, Rebecca Otengo played a crucial role in the creation of new districts, working alongside other prominent figures like Franco Ojur and Daniel Omara Atubo. This initiative has brought administrative services closer to local communities, improving livelihoods and fostering regional development.
Her contributions extend far beyond politics. As a mother and former State Minister for Northern Uganda, Otengo worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people in Lango and the broader Northern region. Her support was instrumental in distributing motorbikes, iron sheets, and other essential resources to churches and local communities—an enduring testament to her unwavering commitment to grassroots development.
When she joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Otengo mobilized the Lango region to support government programs, championing NRM policies and development initiatives. As Minister for Northern Uganda, she spearheaded programs such as restocking livestock, which significantly benefitted farmers and contributed to the region’s recovery.
Today, Rebecca Amuge Otengo continues to work diligently both nationally and internationally. Her steadfast dedication to peace, development, and community empowerment exemplifies the qualities of a true leader and role model.
On this special day, we celebrate great leaders like Mama Rebecca Amuge Otengo—not only in Lango but across Uganda. Her exemplary service and unwavering commitment continue to serve as an inspiration to future generations. Rebecca’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation, and her ongoing efforts will continue to shape a better Uganda.
Thank you.
