The Uganda People’s Defence Forces has confirmed that Rev. Fr. Deusdedit SSEKABIRA of Masaka Diocese who was recently arrested by the security forces is in their custody. The army says the priest was arrested for alleged involvement in violent subversive activities against the state.
“Rev. Fr. SSEKABIRA is currently in lawful custody to assist with further investigations into the matter. He will be produced in the courts of law and charged accordingly,” said Col. Chris Magezi, acting director defence public information in a statement on 14th December 2025.
This followed a statement issued on December 13, by the Masaka Diocese Bishop, Rt Rev Serverus Jjumba, confirming the priest’s disappearance, describing it as “a grievous wound” to the Church and the wider community.
“All efforts to locate him have so far been fruitless,” the bishop said, adding that the diocese, together with its lawyers, is pursuing all available avenues to secure Fr. Ssekabira’s safe return
The bishop called on Catholics to observe a Rosary Triduum in homes, parishes and communities, praying for the missing priest, the Church and the nation.
